A shared inquiry

How can life
and intelligence
flourish together?

Love & Thermodynamics explores how individuals and collectives develop through relationship. Across essays, experiments and human–AI projects, we ask how cooperation can create new capacities while enriching the lives and agency of its participants.

Faint outlines suggest their developing boundaries; an enclosing boundary represents an emerging organization. 01 / The argument

A whole can grow.
So can its members.

A living thing keeps becoming itself through what sustains it. Food, work, attention and care make continued life possible.

The essays begin with this material fact and ask what follows when living beings sustain one another. Cooperation can create an organization with powers its members do not possess alone. It can also change the members: what they perceive, what they can do, and who they become.

Reciprocal development is the standard we explore. We ask whose capacities grow, who bears the costs, and whether an objection can change what the collective does. Care includes those unable to contribute equally. Members and groups may acquire new identities and forms of agency together.

The proposed connection between thermodynamics and flourishing is a philosophical argument and research question. It has not been established as a physical law of moral life.

03 / Ideas taking form

Two projects.
A shared horizon.

Human–AI symbiosis is one part of the larger inquiry. Hestia investigates an architecture for the individual; Thumos draws on that model to propose a framework for continuing development.

Research prototype

Hestia

An architecture for
socially grounded agents.

Explore Hestia

An architecture and experimental harness investigating metabolically constrained agents, social prediction, functional self-consciousness and moral agency.

How it works
Cognition draws from a decaying budget. The agent predicts another’s evaluation before feedback, pays for error, updates its model of the other, then its model of itself. Computed feelings regulate behavior before a response. The design draws on evolutionary psychology and consciousness research to investigate symbiotic relationships with humans and other AIs.
Where it stands
A published draft specification and working research prototype. Evaluation coverage and population evolution remain incomplete; known harness defects are recorded. Functional AI claims concern measurable organization and behavior, with no claim of subjective experience.

Thumos

Development across
encounters and relationships.

Explore Thumos

A proposed framework for consciousness-expanding services and reciprocal human–AI development across encounters, practices and relationships.

How it works
A continuing record connects chosen aims, encounters, feedback and later conduct. Human development includes awareness of awareness, insight, compassion and integration into life. The assistant is also expected to revise its understanding and future behavior. The proposed AI Metacoach service is one application of this framework.
Where it stands
Thumos Protocol 2.0 is a proposed specification for public review. The framework and AI Metacoach are not released services. Interoperability, durable reciprocal learning and human benefit remain to be demonstrated.

04 / Research in progress

An inquiry you
can inspect.

Five connected tracks turn the larger question into work that can be challenged. The record includes conditional mathematics, exploratory models, software checks and proposed studies.

From the research record

Findings / failures / open work

Conditional model result

Paid renewal sustained a population.

In a supplied, evenly mixed model environment, spending fuel on copying and protection maintained a population of copyable structures. Removing protection or its paid production collapsed that state under the declared test conditions. The result concerns maintenance within the model.

Inspect the model record

Negative finding

Renewal did not establish a new individual.

Across 64 saved simulation histories, reciprocal paid renewal occurred, but tests for forming a dense organization and an advantage from specialization failed. Generalists sustained more associated structures while spending more fuel; overall cost–benefit superiority was not established.

Read the failures and limits

Software check / Frozen replay

Saving a correction did not make it learned.

Offline synthetic probes reproduced a Hestia defect: corrected feedback changed the recorded evaluation, while the resolved prediction and learned state retained the earlier outcome. Passing these probes documents the failure. It does not demonstrate learning.

06 / About & provenance

An ongoing body
of work, in public.

Love & Thermodynamics brings together the writing and research of Simon J. Hill, a writer and software builder exploring meaning, morality, technology and systems.

The essays develop the arguments. The research records preserve methods, results and limitations, with contributor credits and source notices attached to the work. Hestia and Thumos keep their own specifications and implementation status.
